Beaches in the Algarve

The magnificent beaches are for many the most important reason to visit the Algarve, and some of the best in Portugal are found around Olhão, on the barrier islands of the Formosa Lagoon Natural Park. The islands of Armona, Culatra, Farol and Barreta (also known as Deserta, or “Desert”) are all a short boat trip away from Olhão, and getting there is in itself an exhilarating experience.

Regular ferries leave Olhão for the beaches of Armona, Culatra and Farol and their route, taking only a few minutes, is through the scenic Formosa Lagoon Natural Park. You can also combine your beach trip with some sightseeing in this fascinating nature area by   taking a water taxi or by hiring a fisherman’s boat to explore the Lagoon on your way to the beach. This also allows you to explore the beaches on the more easterly islands of Tavira and Cabanas.

On Culatra Island fishing still thrives and there are good fish restaurants offering traditional fish and seafood dishes. Besides the pristine beach and perfect water temperature, the beach has no motorised vehicles, ensuring peace and tranquility. The transparency of the water makes it ideal for divers. On the other end of the island, Farol, so named because of its lighthouse, is just as charming and uncrowded.

Barreta, or Deserta, is a true paradise, offering a huge golden beach and clear waters. It  is completely undeveloped, apart from support for its activities, which include windsurfing, boat trips ands sailing.

Whichever beach you choose, the isolation of being on an island, the blue skies and golden sun and sand makes for an idyllic desert island experience. To make the experience even more convenient, the Real Marina can pack a picnic hamper, allowing you complete freedom to spend your day as you wish and enjoy a meal in the beautiful surroundings.
