Formosa Lagoon Natural Park, the Algarve

Stretching 60 km along Portugal’s southern ocean front is the Formosa Lagoon Natural Park. Five barrier islands running parallel to the shore protect the lagoon’s shallow, warm, brackish water and its unique ecosystem from the Atlantic Ocean and allow an astounding array of fauna and flora to flourish.

An important reason for the biodiversity found here is the dynamic environment. Not only do the tides and the varying amount of fresh water mean that the salinity is constantly changing, but the physical shape of the lagoon is also fluid, with new canals and little islands continuously appearing.

These fertile conditions mean that there is a plentiful supply of fish and shellfish, and gathering these has long been an important activity here. The availability of such excellent produce is also reflected in the skill in its preparation, with the visitor being able to enjoy the delicious culinary specialities prepared within sight of where the fish and shellfish were collected.

A good place to start a visit is at the Maritim Environmental Education Centre, just east of Olhão. In addition to the information available at this centre there is a 3 kilometre nature trail with explanatory panels. It also offers informative trips around the lagoon in a restored tuna transport boat. Another interesting attraction is the kennel where the web-footed Portuguese Waterdog, now perhaps better known as the Obama dog, was saved from extinction and where it is still bred.

Ecotourism is well developed here, with guided boat tours leaving from Olhão with specific programmes, such as fishing history, about the barrier islands (with their fantastic beaches), or simply to enjoy the nature. The birdwatching programme is a unique opportunity to view not only the vast amounts of migratory birds that stop over here, but also some of Europe’s rarest birds, including the Purple Swamphen.

Beautiful scenery, astounding biodiversity and ease of access will make your visit to the Formosa Lagoon Natural Park a highlight of your trip.
