Olhão, the Algarve, Portugal |
|
In the Eastern Algarve, with its year round mild climate and sun, lies the town of Olhão, the gateway to the Formosa Lagoon Natural Park and its pristine beaches. While only 15 km away from Faro International, this is the authentic Algarve, its protected status ensuring that only the best and most sensitive development is allowed, and that its natural wonders are preserved. One of these developments is Olhão’s new leisure marina, which opens up this beautiful area to a whole new group of travellers. It compliments the waterfront’s existing neighbouring restaurants and bars, where one can pass the time watching the activity in the marina and the ever changing, fascinating spectacle of the locals and visitors going about their life. The marina is close to Olhão’s picturesque historic centre, filled with Moorish influenced architecture, evidence of the proximity and importance of Africa. A number of pleasant esplanades allow you to enjoy it over a traditional meal or relaxing drink. Olhão is also very much a working port and is in fact the most important fishing port on the Algarve, allowing you to not only enjoy the best and freshest seafood, but also the excitement of the large, animated fish harbour and market. From Olhão the lagoon islands and beaches of Armona, Culatra and Farol can be reached by regular ferry and one can charter fishermen’s boats to further explore the lagoon, its islands and beaches. Ecotourism is also well developed, with expert, guided boat tours to the barrier islands, for birdwatching, to learn about the fishing history or just to appreciate the nature. Or simply have some fun on a cycling tour, by kayak, by pedal boat, or sailing. Olhão is the ideal base from which to discover the unspoilt natural wonders of the Formosa Lagoon. |
